J-0434 $1 1865 NGC PR65

Stunning! A sharp GEM Proof 65 specimen! This coin is an R-7 (7-12 minted). It is a Transitional, meaning they were testing out the Motto banner on the reverse.

From a technical standpoint, you couldn’t ask for a better PR65! Both sides exhibit deep, clear, clean, and incredibly reflective mirrors. They look like a freshly made sheet of glass (all the lines are actually on the holder). A wonderful mix of pale purple/champagne cover all of the reverse and about 2/3 of the obverse. Miss Liberty and the details are fully struck and appear boldly. They also have light creamy frost. The eye appeal is fantastic!

PCGS 0, NGC 1. Only NGC has one graded higher (in our Simpson Collection). The last record of any selling at auction was back in 2003 where a PR65 sold for $51,750.00 Stacks. The Judd Book lists the value at $60,000.00. Keep in mind, this is a regular Silver Dollar except for it has a Motto. It is revered right below the status of a full “classic rarity” (of which the 1866 example is-and that sold for OVER $1,000,000.00 about 4 years ago).
