When building a major set a few years ago, we learned that this date is NOT common and is extremely difficult to locate. Caught us by surprise!
Perfectly clean mirrors are strong and have ZERO problems visible-even when using a strong glass. The coin displays a strong luster. There are some very light die cracks scattered about, but they do NOT affect the coins grade or looks. Both sides are a deeper nickel/pewter color. Every detail is pinpoint sharp in strike. The eye appeal is VERY nice!
Do not let the pop reports fool you. This date was the last date we needed to find in a major PR set we built. The 1879/8 is more common and pops up more often (PCGS pop 24). Still, this date is priced as common. PCGS 15, NGC 12. Only NGC has a single coin higher. The last one to sell brought $1,725.00 09/06 Heritage. Think about it-that was 2 1/2 years ago! We know this is a great buy.
