50C 1842O MED DATE REV 1842 PCGS MS65

$21,500.00

This is the ABSOLUTE FINEST example of this date! Clearly a condition rarity, it is the ONLY one graded by PCGS in GEM and was the NGC MS67 that was sold as part of Gene Gardner’s epic collection. Indeed, aside from this coin, no other certified GEM has sold since October 2001! Smooth, satiny lustrous surfaces sparkle through the pleasing iridescent patina. Exceptionally well made for an early New Orleans coin, all the details of Liberty’s drapery, hair, hand, and cap are fully rendered, the eagle is likewise very crisp and the definition is razor sharp. Depending on the angle the light hits the fields there are some reflective hints here and there. Exceptional eye appeal in every way! PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. Again this WAS the NGC MS67. There is an NGC MS66 on the census, but we believe it is possible that it represents an early submission of this coin, as it does not appear in our auction database. When it sold in  the Gardner sale in June 2014, it realized $28,200; between then and the deadline for the 2015 FUN auction, it was “downgrade crossed” and received a CAC sticker, selling for $19,975 in that sale. PCGS lists a value of $28,500. A 64+ CAC sold for $22,325 in the 2013 ANA auction (ex Richard Jewell Collection). While great type coins are not bringing what they used to, that just provides a great opportunity for the astute specialist to acquire great coins at today’s levels. As a POP 1, NONE FINER, this is a coin to “put away.”
