We have been students of rare $2.5 Libs our entire career. Unhesitatingly we can say this coin ranks as one of the NICEST and most ORIGINAL 1855D we have EVER seen!
Sadly many of these have been over graded, “conserved”, or just plain messed with. To find one so pristine like this is a real treasure.
The surfaces are clean overall. Only with a strong glass can you see a few light ticks/scattered lines (again, VERY light). We highly doubt this coin was ever dipped. Looks like there is an ORIGINAL patina or “old” gold/orange gold. Miss Liberty and the details are sharply struck and do stand out. The wear is light and even. The eye appeal is definitely fantastic!
ONLY 1123 were ever minted. PCGS 4, NGC 3, CAC 1. Here is something really mind blowing: the LAST 55D in AU53 to sell was back in 1999 at B+M. That coin back then brought $18,400.00. Not just because we have always loved them, but you can’t put up any strong argument as to how UNDER valued these are today! Especially original, properly graded, and unmessed with coins like this!
