What was PCGS thinking with these coins? This coin is an EX Naftzger piece (not noted on the holder). Like all the Ex Naftzger pieces, this coin is ridiculously high end!
The ONLY lame excuse we could find for not grading it a MS66-two small ticks HIDDEN in the left field. You really do need a strong glass to see them. The rest of the coin is perfect. There are a few teenie toning dots-but NO flecks. A strong luster shows off fabulous smooth surfaces. There is about 50% beautiful ORIGINAL Mint Red color while the balance is a light brown. Miss Liberty and the details are frosty and have full strikes. The eye appeal is tremendous!
PCGS 1, NGC 1, CAC 1. THIS IS THE FINEST KNOWN 1840 SMALL DATE CERTIFIED. It was lot 601 in the Goldberg Naftzger sale in 09/2009 where it sold for $19,550.00. ANY 1840 in GEM is rare!
