We can not overstate how RARE it is to find ANY 1796 $1 in really CHOICE AU condition. Most come scruffy, ugly, or plagued with problems. This coin is superior to most!
The surfaces actually exhibit some LIGHT luster. Overall, the they have nothing worse than a few scattered lines and really are that clean. this was struck on a very decent planchet. The obverse is a deeper pewter color. The reverse is more a deep mauve/pewter/purple. No question it had resided on felt or something. The colors are totally ORIGINAL. Miss Liberty and the details are surprisingly well struck. The wear is light and even. There is NO discolorations. The eye appeal of this coin is VERY nice!
PCGS 6, NGC 2, CAC 3 (we think CAC beaned this twice). NO CAC pieces have sold at auction. The last one of these to sell (a NON CAC) brought $30,000.00 09/2011 Goldberg (another did sell in auction for $40,250.00-in 2006). Very important: PCGS has ONLY graded 3 coins higher. This is a date you RARELY see EVER offered in choice AU.
