Two UNIQUE MASTER DIE TRIAL strikes. These two pieces probably belong in a museum! It is the ONLY known pattern coinage from 1840.
According to the Judd book, these impressions were not stuck from completed dies. They are really believed to be test patterns (there are NO Stars or date). One was struck in brass, the other looks like silver or lead. The strikes are crisp and clear. Neither coin has any problems. They look terrific!
This is really the beginning of regular Seated coinage. The historical value is unprecedented. if you collect any kind of Seated Coinage (especially Quarters) these two patterns defiantly are must haves for your collection!
Back in 1974 when Pine Tree Auctions was in business, these sold for $35,000.00. They have been away for a long time!
