1C 1785 BAR CENT PCGS AU58

$21,000.00

We can not say we know much about these other than we have seen an few and think they are neater then heck!

Copied from COINFACTS: “Bar “Cents” first appeared in the American Colonies in 1785, when they joined the mix of motley coppers then in circulation. Their weight was too low to be valued at a Cent, but the name has stuck through use and tradition (in fact, the weight is almost identical to the U.S. Half Cents of 1795 and later years). The obverse features a U.S.A. monogram nearly identical to that seen on pewter buttons worn on the uniforms of Continental soldiers. The reverse consists of thirteen parallel bars, signifying the original Colonies. The simple, patriotic design makes these coins a favorite with collectors, although they are rather scarce and expensive.

Bar “Cents” were made in England, possibly at Wyon’s mint in Birmingham (more famous for their Nova Constellatio Coppers). Various forgeries exist, ranging in quality from crude casts to excellent struck copies and electrotypes. All genuine examples have a small, thorn-like projection on the far right side of the bottom edge of the second bar from the top. Electrotypes will also show this projection, so authentication is mandatory.”

How can a coin thats from around 1785 be in such wonderful condition? We couldn’t believe our eyes when we first saw this GEM AU. We were going thru a dealers box and it stopped us dead. We see Lincoln Cents that this coin would blow away!

The coin is struck on a decent planchet. There is only the slightest porosity-which you need a glass to see. Totally ORIGINAL surfaces are not brushed or oiled and do emit a decent luster. There are NO hits or other problems. The color is an even pretty chocolate. Of course the details are sharply struck. To us, this coin had drop dead mesmerizing gorgeous eye appeal-that;s why we bought it. Plus, we think ANY Bar cent is neat!

PCGS 8, NGC 2, CAC ?. An AU58 sold for $16,675.00 03/2010 B+M-we do not know if it was this coin. Do note: an AU55 (NON CAC) sold for $ 20,700.00 08/2011 Stacks. Opportunity knocks loud for someone who wants something totally different and neat!
