One of only 2-3 known (this is an R-8). We bought the last one to appear at auction for $50,600.00 1/08 Stacks. That coin is now locked up in the Simpson Pattern Collection.
It is believed this piece was struck from regular $3 dies. Using a strong glass, you can tell this clearly was a “test pattern”. You will see a few lint marks and a few imperfections in the planchet. The mirrors offer strong reflectivity. Miss Liberty and the details are frosted and have needle sharp strikes. The eye appeal is fantastic!
